Kisalföld - Can't operate...

It is not possible to operate on the former gymnast who suffered a tragic fate - Their apartment in Győr became unlivable.

It was recently revealed that it is not possible to operate on the calcified hip of Zsolt Virág, a former gymnast from Győr who was bedridden for most of his days and paralyzed during floor exercises. The legs of the former age group national team athlete with a tragic fate are falling apart, and because of this, the apartment on the fourth floor, where he lives with his parents and brother, has now become uninhabitable.

Seventeen years ago, Zsolt Virág suffered a tragic, fatal injury during floor exercise at the Mako Student Olympiad. At the end of the poorly executed jump, upon reaching the ground, two cervical vertebrae were sprained and he was immediately paralyzed. Since then, the former national team gymnast spends his days in a wheelchair and lying in bed. However, the young man, who is now 34 years old, has processed and accepted what happened to him, and he tries to live with an amazingly positive outlook and to make his changed life more beautiful with the help of his family and friends.

However, despite the constant physiotherapy, he started a bone calcification process, and it has now reached such a stage that even his family cannot provide him with the help that has become routine in the meantime. Both of Zsolt's legs are separated because his hip bones are ossified.

"We wanted to solve this problem as well, our plan was to operate on our son's leg again. The first operation was back in 2010, when they were able to remove most of the calcified ossification from the hip part of his right leg, but unfortunately not from his left leg, because the main artery was very close to it, but the doctor carved out what he could, who he said that there is a high chance that this ossification will come back and be more severe. After ten years, it unfortunately recurred, and indeed more severely, especially in the left hip. My son's legs became stiff - said Zsolt's mother, Stefánia Pál. – We discussed that we will try the operation again, which is a very serious operation, they cut the head of the femur, but they don't put a hip prosthesis there, like a walking person, but leave it cut, and the ossification around it is chiseled out. This leg stiffness would disappear and I would put my son's legs where I want them."

Although it seemed for a long time that the operation might be possible, in the end no doctor undertook the intervention.

"Those who saw the CT scan in Győr said that the operation would be too risky. A doctor from Nyíregyháza persuaded us for half a year, but in the end he did not undertake the operation either. We even thought about amputation, but that wouldn't really be a solution either. However, we can't put pants on him anymore, we can't lift him into the bathtub or into his bath chair because of his very wide apart legs. We can only bathe him by placing him with his wheelchair on the edge of the tub with his back, together with a chair."

A solution can be a new apartment, or even a house, which is barrier-free

"It's only municipal, but we really like living in this current apartment. We are grateful for it, but it is not possible to transform it as much as it would be necessary. Walls should be moved. Unfortunately, it's not easy to push me into the elevator - says Zsolt already. – My parents want to take in my grandmother, who is getting sicker, and although we would be happy with a four- or even five-room apartment on the ground floor, the real one would obviously be a family house with a small yard somewhere in Győr. We are interested in any solution, even a house in need of renovation. Mom has already written to many people, but so far there has been no response. Actually, it would also be a huge help if we could get a plot suitable for construction, on which, if we sold what we have, we could have a house built according to our needs. It wouldn't be good to become a slave to this apartment."
